Bonnetje voor een Ander – English
Welcome to this page! Here, you can find information on the ‘Bonnetje voor een Ander’ initiative and a list of the participating café’s (see above!). Perhaps you made it to this page because you participated in the ‘Bonnetje voor Ander’ initiative already and in that case: you are part of the soul of our city at its best so thank you.
In the cold wintermonths and with the holidays around the corner, the people of Amsterdam like to get together. They of course prefer to do this in the warmth and cosiness of a bar or café, but unfortunately this is not within reach for everybody in the city. Ordering a nice, hot drink is not a possibility for everyone. That’s why the ‘Partij van de Arbeid’ (our political party in the city council) started the ‘Bonnetje voor een Ander’ initiative, in cooperation with several cafés in our city.
The idea is inspired by a Neapolitan tradition, the caffè sospeso. Participating spots in all parts of our city, offer the guests two options: pay for an extra coffee, a ‘Bonnetje voor een Ander’ (ticket for someone else), without consuming said drink or use a ‘Bonnetje voor een Ander’ to drink a coffee or tea when you don’t have the financial means to do so otherwise. This way, everybody in our city can enjoy the warmth and cosiness of the neighborhood café without a financial threshold.
“Looking out for each other is part of our social city. The neighbourhood café is often a place that serves as the livingroom of a neighbourhood, where people meet and talk to each other. Unfortunately we also see a lot of loneliness in our city, especially during the winter months, because a big part of social life costs money. With this initiative, people of Amsterdam can keep meeting each other, no matter the size of their wallet.” – Lian Heinhuis, faction leader Partij van de Arbeid Amsterdam
The ‘Bonnetje voor een Ander’ initiative starts on Friday December 13th and will keep going for the duration of a month. But of course it would be beautiful if this will become a part of tradition in Amsterdam as well.
